Advantages and Disadvantages of a fireplace in the bathroom

Often, fireplaces are thought of in only one context – as the centrepiece and most commonly used heating source in the living room. In fact, the connection is so potent that it's disconcerting when a living room doesn't have a fireplace. But they are not mutually exclusive. In fact, people have been putting fires and stoves in other rooms for hundreds of years.

The dining room is the next most likely candidate, followed by the bedroom. But one place you are very, very unlikely to have ever seen a fireplace before is in the bathroom. In this article, we'll look at the pros and cons of this unusual design decision.

Bathroom FireplacePro: Mood setting

Though primarily for heating, the living room fireplace is also a great tool for creating atmosphere. Whether you want the room to feel romantic or cosy, the fireplace is a key ingredient. Fortunately, the same thought process can be applied to bathroom fireplaces.

Dreading taking that cold bath on a winter's night? Turn the heating on! Want to unwind in a bubble bath after a stressful week? Compliment it with a fireplace! The advances in hole-in-the-wall technology mean that you can embed a fireplace right next to the bathtub, so its effects are immediate.

Con: Return on investment

There are several practical matters that will dictate whether you can have a fireplace in your bathroom and which fuel type you can have. Space will be the main factor, but there is also the consideration that electric fires are likely out all together, with the amount of water around. Gas fireplaces may be tricky, as they will involve routing in gas lines. So you may be left with just wood burning stoves.

There is nothing wrong with this of course, but there is also the consideration of return on investment. As you aren't in the bathroom all that often buying something really expensive seems foolish. You would need to balance out cost with usage, to see if it is worthwhile over just using the central heating.

Pro: Unique

As we mentioned above, not many homes have fireplaces in their bathrooms, so you are certain to turn heads with your new installation. It also opens up unique design avenues to explore. You could match the surround (should you be getting one) with the rest of your bathroom furniture, for example.

The range of styles available for fires and stoves means it can also help give your bathroom that final push over the line of "classic" or "modern". A big, ornate fireplace would look right at home in a traditionally styled bathroom. Similarly, a hole in the wall installation is as cutting edge as it gets.

Con: Unique

That is not a typo. While you may think the idea of a bathroom fireplace is unique, others may disagree entirely. In the short term, this may mean they dislike your design scheme. This is hardly the end of the world, but long term, it may make the house difficult to sell if everyone turns their nose up at the mantlepiece in the bathroom.

That said, if you don't intend to move, this isn't a problem. So now you have to rectify whether it is worth the expense for this admitted extravagance. If you can't square the difference, then you'll still be OK with your central heating. But if it sounds like a great idea to you, then do it! You stand to be the envy of everyone who comes to visit.
